Glue pens for SEM sample preparation and TEM grid coating pen
The unique 2-way glue pens utilize a special dual action glue which is particularly useful for SEM sample preparation. The unique glue offers both permanent and temporary adhesion. During release from the pens the glue colour is blue; the wet glue with the blue colour is ready for immediate use and permanent adhesion. After a few moments, when the glue starts drying, the blue colour fades away and the glue becomes transparent. The transparent glue is now ready for temporary use; samples can be repositioned and removed. This feature makes the glue very useful for specimen preparation tasks such securing particles and small items to an SEM sample stub. The 2-way glue is an acrylic water-based emulsion and is acid free and xylene free. Available in 3 sizes:
- GP1 - Glue pen squeeze & roll with extra fine 1mm steel tip – 7g glue
- GP2 - Glue pen fine with 2mm polyester tip – 7 g glue
- GP4 - Glue pen with wider chisel type 4mm polyester tip - 8 g glue
The GP1 and GP2 pen with fine tips are designed for dispensing small amounts of glue and for spot glueing. The broader GP4 tip dispenses a wider layer of glue suitable for large sample or powder samples. When the dual action glue is transparent, particles do not “sink” into the glue, but stay on the surface. The dual action glue is not conductive and is primarily suited for non-conducting samples.A conductive coating or grounding of SEM specimens might be needed.
How to use the dual action glue pens:- Remove cap. For the GP1 pen, and squeeze the blue container until the glue flows. For the GP2 & GP4 pens, press the tip straight down until the glue flows.
- Apply glue on the substrate or sample stub.
- When the glue is blue, apply sample for permanent adhesion. When the glue is transparent, apply sample for temporary adhesion.
- Put the protective cap immediately back after dispensing the glue and keep pen capped when not in use.
- If needed, use a sputter coater to coat the sample with a conductive film.
Grid Coating Pen Coat-Quick “G”
The Coat-Quick “G” pen improves adhesion of tissue section on TEM grids. With a light touch of the pen to the TEM grid, the grid is coated with a thin layer of adhesive. Allow for drying at room temperature for 1-2 minutes. After drying of the adhesive coating, the grid is ready for tissue mounting. The Coat-Quick pen is also used for pretreating grids prior to mounting support films such as formvar, Collodion, Pioloform or other fragile membranes. It minimizes dislodging or tearing of the support film. A further application is glueing a TEM grid on a smooth surface for locating or calibration purposes. Benefits of the Coat-Quick “G” grid coating pen are:

- Reduced image drift; section sticks to grid bars
- Reduced tearing; stops at adjacent grid bars

How to use the Coat-Quick “G” grid coating pen:
- Use suitable filter paper or optical paper and place TEM grid on the paper
- Press the tip of the Coat-Quick “G” Pen straight down several times or until the adhesive fluid starts to soak the tip
- Provides a thin layer of adhesive on the grid using a light touch with the pen
- Let dry for 1-2 minutes at room temperature
- The TEM grid is now ready for mounting the tissue section
- Put the protective cap immediately back on the pen and keep the pen capped when not in use
